Movies Open on Christmas 2011

Movie theaters are open almost everywhere on Christmas Day and on Christmas Eve, but finding one suitable for kids can be a problem. This year is something of an exception, with several pictures in general release that are safe for the whole family to watch this comimg Christmas weekend.

Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chip-Wrecked, is animated fare designed for children. It should be in wide release at least through Christmas Day. At just 87 minutes of screen time, the kids will less opportunity to get weepy or sleepy. Adults can just grit their teeth until the end credits roll. Spoiler alert: The Chipmunks and Chipettes all survive being "Chip-Wrecked", so another sequel may be inflicted on us next year. It "stars" Justin Long.

The Adventures of Tintin is another Spielberg spectacular fit for family viewing. The animated adventure runs 107 minutes, so be ready to carry some sleeping littles ones out of the theater and back to the car. Jamie Bell, Andy Serkis, and Daniel Craig voice the seafaring treasure hunters.

Happy Feet Two is also animated and suitable for kids to watch. Kids loved the music and dancing of the first film, so they probably will love this one too. (I'm guessing. Haven't seen it yet.) At 100 minutes its a good days Christmas entertainment. Especially if supplemented with hot dogs, popcorn and gummy Elijah Wood and Robin Williams are back for this installment. It has been out for a while, but there are still theaters carrying it for the holidays.

Hugo, coming in at 126 minutes might not be the best choice for toddlers and rug rats to attend. It is an animated drama directed by Scorsese, and voiced by the great Christopher Lee. The reviews are good, so teens and adults should like seeing as a Christmas treat.

The Muppets brings the classic Muppet puppets to the big screen this Christmas season, and who doesn't love Kermit, Miss Piggy, Cookie Monster and the crew? This should be a good candidate for an all ages Christmas outing. Run time for this film is 103 minutes.

Arthur Christmas is an animated movie for the Christmas season actually built around a Christmas theme. Arthur, the youngest son of Santa Claus himself, undertakes an urgent operation utillizing Santa's surprising collection of high tech gadgetry and the assistance of the elves. Mixed reviews, 97 minutes on screen. It's an alternatve to consider watching this Christmas season.
